Lithography Workshop
In May 2023, Studio Shunno hosted an intensive Lithography Workshop led by renowned artist and printmaker Jhuton Chandra, offering participants a rare opportunity to engage with one of the most nuanced and process-driven printmaking techniques. The workshop was designed as both a technical and conceptual exploration, introducing participants to the fundamentals of lithography while encouraging individual expression through the medium.
The participants came from diverse academic, professional, and creative backgrounds, including practising artists, students, designers, and first-time printmakers. This diversity enriched the learning environment, fostering dialogue across disciplines and allowing participants to approach lithography from varied perspectives. The workshop emphasized that prior experience was not a prerequisite; curiosity and openness to experimentation were central to the process.
Under Jhuton Chandra’s guidance, participants were introduced to the principles of lithographic drawing, stone and plate preparation, chemical processes, and printing techniques. Equal attention was given to understanding the material sensitivity of lithography—how grease, water, pressure, and time interact to produce subtle and expressive results. The hands-on sessions allowed participants to work closely with the materials, gaining an appreciation for the discipline and patience required by the medium.
Beyond technical instruction, the workshop created a reflective and collaborative studio atmosphere. Participants shared ideas, discussed visual language, and learned through observation of one another’s processes. Experiencing lithography within Shunno’s professional studio environment offered a learning context distinct from conventional classrooms, deepening both engagement and confidence.
The lithography workshop with Jhuton Chandra reaffirmed Studio Shunno’s commitment to preserving and promoting traditional printmaking practices while making them accessible to wider audiences. The experience left participants with new skills, expanded creative perspectives, and a lasting connection to the tactile and thoughtful nature of printmaking.
